Taking Stock – October

Taking Stock - Image by Robyna

The very lovely Pip Lincolne from Meet Me At Mikes has created a beautiful way to create a snapshot of your life at a particular moment: Taking Stock.

It’s a list of prompts that capture where you are, what you are doing, how you are feeling and where you are going.   I did this as part of Pip’s Blog with Pip course and I am just bursting to share it with you.

In a month when we are looking at creating memories and cherishing the moments (more about that on Wednesday), it seems a lovely way to start.

This is my Taking Stock for October (in rhyme).

MakingSofties for Mirabel, that my five year old keeps claiming.
Cooking: Very simple dishes, unless I’m entertaining.

Drinking:Lemon, lime and bitters, and wishing it were French Bubbles.
Reading: Post-apocalyptic fiction as it gives perspective to my troubles.

Wanting: More time to write, to laugh and spend with my boys.
Looking: At a great big mess, a house taken hostage by its toys.

Playing: At being a wordsmith, a creator and a poet.
Deciding: Whether it should be pronounced Mo-aye or Mo-wett*.

Wishing: I was lying on a beach somewhere in Fiji.
Enjoying: Writing this poem when the rhymes come easily.

Waiting: For my boys to come home from school and a play.
Liking: That I get to see my children each and every day.

Wondering: Whether I will ever sleep an entire night again.
Loving: That my little baby is so worth that pain.

Pondering: The direction in which my life is going.
Considering: When I might get do some more sewing.

Watching: Re-runs of Offspring, so I can get my fix.
Hoping: Nina and her family return in season six.

Marvelling: At the world through my baby’s big blue eyes.
Needing: To stop and just watch the clouds floating through the skies.

Smelling: Freshly watered grass on day that’s nice and sunny.
Wearing: Frocks every day to raise Frocktober money.

Following: All the other Frock Stars on my insta feed.
Noticing: I have many more dresses than I strictly need.

Knowing: That I am a really very very lucky.
Thinking: I won’t have another baby, even if I’m clucky.

Feeling: Kind of tired, but both happy and content.
Admiring: Julia Gillard, I saw her speak: so eloquent.

Sorting: Out all the million things running through my head.
Buying: Nothing this month as I am going to donate instead.

Getting: Out of bed is the best part of my day.
Bookmarking: All the blogs: I want to hear what you have to say.

Disliking: That we don’t save the daylight here.
Opening: Up more bills than parcels I fear.

Giggling: Over some of the lines that I have written.
Feeling: That the blogging bug has definitely bitten.

Snacking: Freshly baked banana bread, the butter all seeped in
Coveting: The amount of times my husband has sleeped in.

Wishing:That I could catch some good quality Zzzz’s.
Helping: To shed light on an insidious disease.
Hearing: Nothing at all but the sound of my computer hum,
Which is really kind of nice when you are a busy mum!

*I have it on good authority that Moet should be pronounced Mo’wett

Do you want to play along?  It’s tremendous fun and Pip is a very generous sort who likes others to join in. Here is Pip’s blank list:

That’s so cool! I have read a few Taking Stock posts around the place but no-one else has been clever enough to craft it into a poem. New level of blogging achievement: unlocked! I would love to hear Julia Gillard speak as I found her very inspiring as a Prime Minister. And I too am trying to squeeze in more time for writing and reading blog posts – it’s a bit of a juggle some days 🙂

    • Robyna says:

Aw thanks. I was wondering if anyone else had done a poem – you learn there is no such thing as a new idea in blog land 🙂 She was amazing to listen to – very warm and engaging and incredibly articulate.

That’s a great list, Robyna! I found myself smiling at lots of the things you alluded to in your current phase with your littles. These things fast become memories….treasure them! I’m not so far ahead of you but some of those things seem like light years ago! I’m currently contemplating that I’m about to take my middle dance crazy nine year old to see Katy Perry, where it feels like minutes ago we were at The Wiggles! It’s all good! X

    • Robyna says:

I know – I just want to bottle my little one year old at the moment – so precious. I know a few mums heading out to Katy with their daughters – hope you both have the absolute best time!

I LOVE to immerse myself in a great post-apocalyptic novel, dystopian fiction is one of my favourite genres. I’m afraid of lists like that – they sound like far too much scary self-analysis to me. I prefer to stay shallow. BAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!

    • Robyna says:

When the characters in your novel are busy avoiding cannibals and figuring out how they are going to continue the human race, it certainly makes looking after you children seem less frightening. I daresay you would do a very fun Taking Stock post 😉

I love this rhyming version of taking stock – very clever and fun. You have raised the bar for sure. Also, I have heard that Moet is pronounced ‘Mo’wett’ too (like at a event that they were sponsoring…) so you are not alone, however it doesn’t seem to sound right and I still call it ‘Moway’! x

    • Robyna says:

Oooh, I think I’d like to go to an even they were sponsoring 🙂 It reminds me of the Hermes debate – I think I always get that wrong too.

What a gorgeous post Robyna! You’ve put a big smile on my dial at the end of a tough day 🙂 I also have trouble sleeping and love banana bread with the butter all seeped in too (who doesn’t right?) I read an article once saying that it is pronounced mo’wett (gee I’d love some right now regardless of pronunciation!!!) I love that you’ve written poetry, you’ve inspired me to finally do my own Taking Stock post…one day!

I think it’s such a lovely thing – that Pip is very clever at thinking up lovely things! Sarah is using it with her hubby who works FIFO so that they can catch up with each other’s thougths – how wonderful and romantic is that?
