My dark, hot love affair

coffee, my love

I am in the midst of an affair. I know I should give it up. I know it’s not good for me. But everyone morning I wake and the desire is strong. Some mornings I am happy for it to be cheap, quick and dirty. Proffered from the Aldi coffee machine (because I am too tight for Nespresso).

I pat myself on the back for saving money and ignore the guilt about the land-filling pod I am recklessly throwing away. I take a sip of the sweet, sweet nectar and feel it work through my exhausted bones. Then boys need attending to and lunches must be made. The object of my ardent affection sits alone, growing cooler by the second until it’s unceremoniously thrown down the sink.

Sometimes my love affair leads me to my local coffee shop. The barrista knows my face and my order. The coffee is exceptional and I close my eyes in anticipation as the first frothy goodness touches my lips. I sigh and embrace my skinny cappuccino with both hands. Fingers entwined around the takeaway cup. Sometimes my barrista takes the day off. Someone else prepares the coffee and it’s never as good. I try to fake it but I think he sees it my eyes.

Sometimes I will be out with friends at a cafe. The coffee will be a gamble. A chance encounter and a touch of excitement. At times it will be lovely and at times barely passable. But even when it’s bad, it’s still good. Sometimes I know I will go back for more, and other times I know I will never ask for it again. But they always ask $4, no matter the quality. And I pass over my coins willingly in exchange for that milky brown liquid, that happiness in a cup. And the chance to drink it still warm. Coupled with good conversation, what could be better?

Ah coffee, friend to mothers, saviour of students, delicious antidote to morning and companion to those burning the midnight oil. I do love you.

Now, shall we talk about wine?

Are you in a caffeine fuelled love affair?

I agree with all scientific surveys that tell us both coffee and red wine are excellent for us and refuse to believe in any others 🙂

Sweet nectar of all that is holy, YES. First thing in the morning = GIVE ME COFFEE AND NO ONE GETS STABBED. Wine? Yuck city! No bueno, no wine, no champers, just pass the coffee.

Mmhmm! I’ve tried wine and I just don’t see the appeal. I’ve had champagne, don’t like it either. I’ve had some tequila in a mixed drink and I didn’t like how my head felt fuzzy. Coffee I can handle and on occasion, a good iced vanilla chai from Starbucks.

I am a coffee lover too. Latte with one sugar at the cafe, White with one at home (a la instant) The only thing that keeps me moving with the 3 boys. I might shout myself a cafe coffee tomorrow xx

Yes! Coffee. Particularly coffee outside my home, made with professional passion… but when desperation strikes, I’ll meet Coffee anywhere. I didn’t realise Coffee was seeing other girls. He told me it was exclusive. I might have to learn to share.

I don’t drink coffee or have a need to drink coffee. I will drink it if it’s offered, but I’m a chai latte girl or hot chocolate with 2 marshmallows kind. Which is strange really because we have a cheapo coffee machine from Woolworths and my husband doesn’t drink coffee either.

Ah, I see your problem. It was articulated in the last sentence of your comment 🙂 I wish I could treat coffee with same sense of indifference!

Hmmm… something happened to my comment. I’m not sure what. Anyhoo… I just said I’m not a tea or coffee drinker but HAVE to have Vanilla Diet Coke on waking every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s 5am or 8am.

Oh gosh, those comments are pesky like that aren’t they? Thanks for persevering – so many of my comments have been eaten up by the internet. I think our little addictions are secretly good for us (at least they make us feel good).

  6. Mystery Case says:

I gave coffee up and turned into a morning person, after years of being a night owl that hardly slept. Who knew. It didn’t last long though. Love my coffee too much.

I’m in a total caffeine love affair. My day starts with a coffee from trusting pod machine (not Nespresso cos I’m also stingy) then a visit to my favourite barista on the way into work, then a third mid morning. I’m hooked. I thought getting a machine at home would curb me buying so many at work but I was so wrong! LOL

Children take note. The uninterrupted first coffee of the day must strictly follow the airline safety rules – “fit your own oxygen mask first before assisting children”. It is in everyone’s best interest.
