How to make a fringed shirt from a t-shirt

Fringes and tassels are currently en vogue. Which is great because I love a good fringe. Today I wanted to show you how to turn a plain black top into a fringed shirt.

You Need

  • A plain black t-shirt that which is quite long. I bought a size 20 black t-shirt from K-Mart (I’m normally a 10 – 12)
  • Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • About an hour

How To

  1. The lower part of the t-shirt will become the tassels. Figure out how long you’d like your tassels and how short you are okay with your shirt being. You can always wear a singlet underneath if you don’t want to go too cropped. Use the ruler to mark the line across the bottom of the shirt. Cut across the line
  1. Cut off the side seams off the piece you have removed from the bottom of the shirt. You will have two pieces of fabric to fringe. Using your ruler, evenly mark where you want the tassels. I think 1cm works. Make sure that you leave the hem of the shirt at the TOP of the fringing. It will make cutting and sewing the fringing easier. Once you have marked the entire strip – cut along the lines. I just cut both pieces at the same time to save time.
  1. Because the t-shirt will be larger than what you normally wear, the sleeves will be quite long. I capped mine by cutting them on the angle. Once you have cut one side, use that piece to measure the other side so that they are event.

Sleeves

  1. Place the fringed pieces on your top where you think they look great. You can sew them over the shoulder and onto the back. Pin in place and sew.
  1. Rock your new fringed shirt.

Washing notes: I have washed this shirt in a normal cycle and it’s fine to do so. The fringing will become a little more “distressed” but I think that’s fine with this kind of look.

Robyna, this look so damn cool on you! A bit of fringe just adds the cool factor to an outfit and even better when it doesn’t cost anything! PS- Love, love, loving your hair too.
