Not so long ago a lovely friend asked how to style a kimono. You know, so that you don’t look like you have fallen out of bed. I immediately thought of the undisputed queen of kimonos, Andrea. You might know her as Icadoo on Istagram.
I have hit the queen up for some inspiration. If you have been wanting to try this trend, and have been a little shy or uncertain, this post is for you.

How do you style a kimono so that it doesn’t look like a dressing gown?
Think of your kimono as a jacket. In summer I like to style mine with shorts and a singlet or a tank dress. Secret tip: I actually use a $5 kmart pyjama t-shirt. The kimono being slightly longer than your shorts or dress is a really cute look. In winter I layer with leggings under a long top and I tend to wear a longer style. Adding some jewellery gives the whole outfit a bit of a twist and more glam look. The more layers and texture you add, the less dressing-gown you will feel.

What’s your favourite style?
My absolute favourite style is the gypsy kimono style. With ankle boots, a cool necklace, lots of arm bling and even a hat. That’s when I feel most comfortable.

Where do you get your gorgeous kimonos?
I have collected quite a few kimonos over the last few years. I can’t stop adding new ones! I always check out Cotton On or Supre, although they tend to have a larger selection in the summer season. Tigerlily has gorgeous options if you want to spend a bit more money. I often just type in “kimono” or “cape” in good old google and bam, you find several, totally affordable kimonos. Check this out . Other sneaky places to buy are the pyjama and beach-wear sections of department stores.

What is the best way to accessorise?
I love adding a necklace (or two) and bangles. My general formula is a basic canvas created with a solid colour (often black), with a gorgeously printed kimono and then jewellery that picks up the tones of the kimono. Boots will take this to a boho place. Heels will be more glam. Sandals and thongs give more a more relaxed, festival vibe.

What’s your advice to someone who wants to wear a kimono but they are a bit scared to give it a try?
My advice is just give it a go! Add a kimono to some skinny jeans and a plain white t-shirt or top with boots as a starter. Just think like Nina Proudman and you can’t go far wrong. You might want to try a shorter option as your first foray. T-shirt dresses make great partners for kimonos and we have already discussed the happy marriage between leggings, long tops and kimonos. They are are also great to hide a few kilos, well at least it works for me … (Editor note: Andrea has no extra kilos to hide that I can see)
You can find some more inspiration on this Pinterest board. You should definitely follow Icadoo on instagram (if you don’t already) and watch out for the #IcadooRocksKimonos tag. The gorgeous Bron over at Flat Bum Mum also has kimono inspiration .

How do you like to style your kimonos?
Thanks so much to the gorgeous Andrea for her advice and fabulous pics.
Definitely a staple in my wardrobe! I love the pop of colour, different patterns and floating material.
Such a gorgeous wardrobe option.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Still very scared to give it a go. But I will try.
You will ROCK it.
It’s like a dressing gown for outside- love it!
That’s what appeals to me 🙂 Once you get over the fear factor, it’s a really easy way of dressing.
I just bought my first kimino. It’s actually more of a resort wear pool cover up, but after reading this post I think I might be able to style it for every day.
Thanks for inspo!
You look great.
Definitely – you can rock those babies all year round.
Love the gypsy and Nina Proudman look! I’m a boots girl! 🙂
3 more sleeps until we can see more Nina style!
I’ve never considered wearing a kimono, but I do love these styles and may just be tempted to give it a try. They look fab!

Yep. All hail the Queen 🙂
I am a huge fan of my cap sleep intimo wrap… it’s not as loose as a kimono but I like that about it.

My friend has one of those and loves it too. Always got to like clothes you can wear as easily outside as you can to bed 🙂
I have one but I just never remember to wear it! Maybe this coming summer will be my season of the kimono.

Do it. You’ll look fab.
What a beautiful kimono collection Andrea has. There are so many beautiful ones but the whole dressing gown thing has always put me off… until now!

She makes you want to break out the kimonos doesn’t she?
I love Andrea’s style! Kimonos aren’t my thing but I just look at her pics and sigh. Nails it every time. I’m more of a fitted clothing kinda gal, generally. I do like a flowy vest, though. x
