How to make an earring holder / dream catcher

how to make an earring dream catcher

I am all about keeping my wardrobe looking lovely. One of the ways I do that is to hang my dangling earrings on a home-made dream catcher. It’s a pretty and easy way to display my earring collection. And most of all it keeps things visible – meaning I might actually wear them.

I thought you might like to know how to make one yourself.

You Need

  • An embroidery hoop, made of an outer and inner hoop. You can buy them at Spotlight and other craft stores.
  • A selection of lace ribbons. If you want to hang earrings from the lace ribbon, make sure it’s quite broad and fairly strong – see the picture below for an example.
  • A selection of thin satin ribbon
  • A selection of embellishments such as feathers, beads etc.
  • A circle of lace or hessian a little bit larger than your outer hoop. You want this to be able to hold earrings, so make sure it’s not too gauzy.
  • If you use hessian, you may want to extra lace to place over the top
  • A glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors

To Make

  • Remove the inner embroidery hoop.
  • Ensure that the screws are at the top centre of the outer hoop.
  • Place the thickest of the lace ribbons in the centre of the bottom of the outer hoop and glue down.  Ensure that you glue the ribbon back onto itself – not onto the hoop.  If you glue onto the inner hoop, the outer hoop may not fit back.
  • Place the other lace ribbon around the centre ribbon and glue in the same manner.
  • Tie the satin ribbons onto the hoop.
  • You might like to add feathers or beads to the ends of the satin ribbons.
  • Set aside the outer hoop.
  • Place glue around the rim of the inner hoop.
  • Glue the circle of lace down, keeping it quite taut.
  • Place the outer hoop back over the inner hoop, which now has the lace on it.
  • If there is any lace sticking out the back, trim.
  • Tie the shortest of the satin ribbon around the screws at the top of the outer hoop.

I recently shared my wardrobe on the Mumtastic Facebook page and you can see how I use my dream catcher / earring holders here.

These are also lovely in children’s rooms and just as pretty decorations. They are also a wonderful healing project if you are grieving and want to make something in your loved one’s honour.

Love the dream catcher earring holder. Such a great way to keep things visible. I keep my earrings on a mug holder stand so I can see them. I do need to invest in some big danglers now I have short hair. x
