The Party Kit

The Party Kit

It’s that time of year where the invites start rolling in and texts are flying about finding “a good time to catch up before year end”. I love it. I love the catching up and the excuses to dress up. I love the rare opportunity to forget about being “mum” for the evening and just have fun.

But all that partying can take its toll on a girl who doesn’t party with any regularity during the year.

Because I’m not party fit, I have a party kit. A few pre-packed things in a cute little bag to help me through the season.  Read more

The necklace wardrobe

Every woman should have a basic necklace wardrobe. Much like the basics in your clothing wardrobe, a well edited collection of necklaces will offer a go-to in every situation.

Your necklace wardrobe

The addition of a necklace can take an ordinary outfit into extraordinary territory. It can make a plain top look brilliant. Long necklaces elongate the body. Shorter ones bring attention to your face. They can introduce a summer element into a still-wintery wardrobe. They offer pops of colour and fun. They are quick-change artists when you need to dress up or down. They don’t take a leap of faith to wear. And they needn’t cost a lot. What’s not to like? Read more

The confidence bank

This post is a bit different. Still about style but the innate style that comes with confidence. And how to retain that confidence when it takes a beating.

confidence bank

Some people say the most beautiful thing a woman can wear is her smile. I’ll disagree and say it’s confidence. When I look at the women I admire, whose style I love, the common theme is confidence. They are different ages and sizes. They have wildly different aesthetics. But they are tied by comfort in their own skin and a kindness to themselves and others. I have loads of friends though, that have decided to get plastic surgery to help them gain confidence. A few of them have even gone over to NYC to get the surgery that they want. This is great to be honest because it makes them happy with their body and is totally worthwhile doing if you want it. Just make sure to do your research first before you commit to anything. How to wear boho (and not look hobo)

Even before the lovely Nina Proudman graced our screens I have been obsessed with boho.

how-to-dress-bohonot-hobo

The relaxed girl with sunshine in her hair and peace in her soul, wrapped in long skirts and good intentions. The festival girl, cool and charming in her battered boots and grandmother’s dress. The traveller, borrowing looks from her destinations, weaving her bits and pieces into her outfits like a sartorial travel diary. Read more

How to make cheap clothes look expensive

how-to-make-cheap-clothes-look-expensive

We live in age of fast fashion. I can buy my clothes alongside my milk at Coles. An outfit worn by a celebrity will be re-interpreted in the chain stores within weeks. There are new jeans that cost less than a sandwich.

I feel uncomfortable about fast fashion for a number of reasons. Primarily the means by which stores can sell things so cheaply. It promotes a generic look along with a throw-away mentality. And, of course, it’s very difficult for independent designers, brands and shops to compete.

On the flip-side, I know that for a lot of people cheaper fashion means they have access to clothes they didn’t before.

Whether you are buying your clothes from Mix or from an Op Shop, here are seven ways to make a cheaper garment look more expensive and less generic: Read more
