On Friday morning, I awoke at 4:30am (not an unusual occurrence courtesy of Baby E) to drive to the airport and catch a plane to Sydney for the day (a very, VERY unusual occurrence).  To add to the surreal nature of the experience, I was actually camping. So at 4:45 am in the morning I donned a fancy dress and sparkly shoes and applied make-up in the camping amenity block.

Sarah and I had been shortlisted as finalists in the Bupa Blog Awards. The awards lunch was being held in Sydney and we are Brisbane girls. At first, I didn’t think we would go. It seemed too expensive. Too much of an imposition on our families. But friends and family both encouraged us – how many chances like this will you get in your lifetime? they asked. And so we both booked our tickets, looking forward to attending together, a lunch without our children in tow and celebrating our blogs modest success. The days passed and our excitement grew. And then reality happened. Sarah became very ill and had to be hospitalised. Read more

The world according to my five year old + An AWESOME Give Away!

Photo credit Robyna MayMaster I is a character.  I know this because the first thing his Prep teacher said at our inaugural teacher/parent interview was “ah, your son is quite a character.”

She wasn’t the first to make the observation.  I am still unsure as to whether this is a compliment, but at least he stands out from the crowd.  Never a bad thing.  He does do and say things that are ridiculously hilarious.  Every time I relay one of his quirky stories, I am told – “I do hope you are writing all this down.”

Living life through the screen: taking it back

Getting out from behind the screen: Image Credit the Mummy and the MinxWhat was the first thing you did when your baby smiled, sat up by themselves, clapped or experienced another major milestone moment? Did you reach for your phone to try and capture this moment in time as effortlessly as you were overcome with the sheer joy of it?

The last time you went to a gig or a festival, was there a sea of phone screens about half a foot above everyone’s heads. (Yes, I know very funny right? A festival?! Ha!) On Riverfire night, did you snap away trying to capture the perfect photo of the fireworks? Why are we driven to capture moments? And seriously, what are we doing with all of this stuff once we have it?

Here are our thoughts on a difficult subject …

Five super ace awesome things about being a FIFO wife

Over the last month I can safely say that I burnt myself out and ended up really sick. I also faced up to the fact that I can’t do ‘life’ on my own anymore and asked my husband to come home. It was a big, scary question to ask, but he said “yes” without even blinking. It’s a good feeling to know he’s coming home once he finds the right job.

I know what you’re all thinking – that’s not very funny Sarah…

DJ Lance 2

Well in an effort to turn my frown upside down, I thought I’d have a think about what makes FIFO life (or DIDO, BIBO, etc) super ace awesome fun! *said with a DJ Lance voice. Here is what I have come up with: Read more

10 ways to protect images of our kids on the internet

10 Ways to protect images of your kids on the internet

As a part of this month’s challenge, we thought it would be irresponsible of us if we didn’t discuss the serious side of keeping our kids images safe on the internet.

Many of us snap and post without giving it a second thought. But what are the risks once we post that photo?

I had a discussion yesterday with Detective Senior Sergent Steve Loth from Taskforce Argos. Taskforce Argos is a specialised branch in the Queensland Police Service that is responsible for the investigation into online child exploitation and abuse. Detective Senior Sergent Loth was very generous with his time and provided some key messages we should all be thinking of when we manage our photos. A lot of it is common sense, but it is a good reminder all the same. Read more
